Alec and Amanda Miller close out our summer long series.

Proper 11a: Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven.

Proper 10a: Jacob and Esau are born. One is a hunter/gatherer while the other stays close to his mother’s tent.  One will steal from the other in order to obtain an unmerited inheritance.

Proper 9a:  Abraham’s Servant vows to find Isaac a wife.  He meets Rebekah at the well, brings her back to Isaac, and the Covenant of God continues to unfold in the most unlikely of ways.

Proper 8a: June 29, 2008: Abraham and Isaac.  Will Baker, our guest proclaimer, focuses his sermon on Abraham and Isaac.

Proper 7a: Hagar and Ishmael find themselves begging God for mercy in the Wilderness.  Was he laughing at or with his three year old brother when Sarah was filled with rage? Does God really condone the decision to place them in the wilderness?  The summer-long narrative continues and points to Abraham losing his second son in next week’s service.    

Proper 6a:  Abraham finds himself hosting three visitors and Sarah finds herself laughing at our conversation.  Is she laughing with or is she laughing at God?  The answer to this question will shape our understanding of the story.  

Abraham is called by God and then proceeds to stumble right out of the gate.  What do we glean from his willingness to go? What do we learn from Abraham’s failure along the way?

And so our summer long emphasis on the Hebrew Bible begins.  The service focuses on Genesis 6:11-22; 7:24; 8:14-19.  The destruction of the world, and divine regret that comes with it, will introduce a new Covenant between God and all of creation.
How much do we really know about this text? What does it say about God and what is our role in the covenant?
