Bridging the Gap: Why Energy Code Training Matters

quotation-marks
Our training sessions provided practical, real-world guidance. We combined building science principles with insights from energy modeling and on-site experience to offer not just information, but actionable clarity. Attendees heard from subject matter experts, asked detailed questions, and gained tools they could put into practice immediately.

As Virginia begins to implement the 2021 Residential Energy Code, clear and accessible guidance is essential to a smooth transition. Builders, inspectors, as well as trade and design professionals, all benefit from a shared understanding of what’s changed and how to apply it effectively and consistently on the job site.

To meet this need, Viridiant recently hosted in-person and online Virginia Residential Energy Code training sessions. These sessions were paired with the release of a comprehensive set of support materials designed to help professionals make sense of the updates, ask practical questions, and prepare for enforcement. With new expectations now in effect, these tools are helping teams across the Commonwealth deliver high-performance, code-compliant homes with greater confidence.

Supporting the Release of the 2021 Code Resources

To help professionals understand and apply the code, a comprehensive new set of materials has been developed and is now available. Viridiant, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development and the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance, created the 2021 Virginia Residential Energy Code Guide Book to serve as a practical companion to the code itself.

A hard copy of the book was mailed directly to Building Officials at all Virginia localities, ensuring that building departments across the state have access to consistent and high-quality guidance. It is intended to help professionals better understand and apply the code in the field.

Why the Training Was Needed

Many professionals are still asking critical questions: How do I apply these updates on an active job site? What construction details or documentation will inspectors be looking for? How can I verify that homes meet ventilation and testing requirements in the field?

Our training sessions provided practical, real-world guidance. We combined building science principles with insights from energy modeling and on-site experience to offer not just information, but actionable clarity. Attendees heard from subject matter experts, asked detailed questions, and gained tools they could put into practice immediately.

From insulation values and air sealing to ventilation testing and lighting controls, the code updates are important steps forward in building performance. With even, informed application, these code changes will impact Virginians by reducing residential operational expenses. Viridiant stands as a unique resource to help advance that goal with all stakeholders in the homebuilding industry.

Highlights from the Training

Participants reviewed the most significant updates to the code, including revised climate zones, increased insulation requirements, duct leakage limits, ventilation airflow testing, and controls for interior and exterior lighting.

We also introduced the new efficiency package option under the prescriptive compliance path, which requires homes to include one advanced measure such as improved HVAC performance or enhanced air sealing.

Equally important, the training allowed for open discussion. Enforcement challenges, which are a concern across the industry, and attendees voiced where confusion or inconsistency is still happening in the field. These conversations are vital, not only for our team but for shaping future support and outreach.

Post-Training Feedback and What Comes Next

Each training session concluded with a look ahead — reviewing available resources, key timelines, and how professionals can stay informed as the 2021 Virginia Residential Energy Code rolls out. Many participants left with a stronger understanding of their responsibilities and greater confidence in the support available to them.

The results of our recent code training survey highlighted a clear demand for continued education in several key areas of the 2021 Virginia Energy Code. Many participants expressed a need for deeper guidance on complex topics like ventilation system design, moisture management, and code-required testing such as blower door and duct leakage. Manuals J, S, and D were also frequently mentioned as areas where additional support would be especially useful.

These results highlight the demand for clear, practical guidance that meets professionals where they are and helps them apply the code with confidence. This feedback is helping shape our next steps as we build out more advanced and hands-on training opportunities to meet the needs of our growing audience. As Virginia moves forward with implementation, Viridiant remains committed to being a trusted resource for ongoing education, dialogue, and support.
