Lecture: Zero Energy Housing | Performance and Costs

August 17, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

free

Join us on August 17th as we discuss findings from a multi-year study of Community Housing Partners’ Grissom Lane Apartments that aims to 1) evaluate the efficacy of a widely used residential energy modeling tool (REM/Rate) to predict energy use in a zero-energy housing development 2) evaluate the cost effectiveness of zero energy housing compared to standard housing. The presentation will unpack quantitative elements; such as predicted vs. observed energy data and zero energy construction costs vs. standard housing costs that could inform the residential housing industry, Home Energy Rating industry and utilities interested in understanding the opportunity for low-load residential buildings to reduce peak demand issues, and housing practitioners concerned with balancing construction cost and long term operating cost affordability and occupants needs in the delivery of high quality housing. Findings from the energy use data suggest the studied development achieved zero-energy performance. The project’s total costs per unit were 3.7% less than standard multifamily housing normalized for location, suggesting construction premiums are approaching cost neutral for practices and technologies necessary to achieve zero energy performance.
