The 3rd Annual Sustainable Leadership Awards was held on March 29th at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen at 2880 Mountain Road, Glen Allen, Virginia. The event drew over 130 individuals representing home builders, nonprofit and for profit housing providers and developers, program sponsors, affordable housing advocates and those interested in creating green housing opportunities in Virginia. Since EarthCraft Virginia’s adoption in 2006, residential green building efforts in Virginia have far surpassed national averages. EarthCraft Virginia has certified over 1,600 homes and 7,000 multifamily dwelling units to date. This year’s award winners were:

Single Family Developer: Eagle Construction of Va, LLC (3rd year in a row!)
Multifamily New Construction: Virginia Supportive Housing – South Bay Apartments, Portsmouth, VA
Multifamily Renovation: Landmark Development – Martinsville Lofts, Martinsville, VA
Habitat for Humanity Affiliate: Richmond Metro Habitat for Humanity
Architect/Architecture Firm: CJMW Architecture
Home Builders Association of the Year: Blue Ridge Home Builders Association (3rd year in a row!)
Most Energy Efficient Project of the Year: Bain-Waring Builders’ home built in Midlothian

Remarks from Delegate Chris Peace of the 97th District and Co-Founder of the Energy Independence and Economic Security Caucus excited the crowd as he acknowledged the housing industry’s effort to reduce the building sector’s domestic energy consumption through energy efficiency. He commended EarthCraft Virginia for providing a statewide program that empowers builders, provides technical assistance and training, and creates jobs. Delegate Peace went on to highlight Virginia’s recent No. 1 ranking by MoneyRates.com as the “Best State to Make a Living” as well as the state’s 6.2 unemployment rate – which is well below the national average.
